Why I quit: kernel developer Con Kolivas

August 25, 2007

How open is “open-source” development? While the source is out there for all to see, what if the other players in the game don’t accept your work? Con Kolivas experienced some of the human realities of cooperative development.

Israelites & Christians

August 20, 2007

Wally Behan is preaching through Deuteronomy since Sunday. He began with Deut 1:1-8.

A difficult question is how Deuteronomy, and the entry of Israel into the promised land relates to Christians today. Wally saw Israel in Deuteronomy as a witness to the Caananite culture, as Christians are to be a witness to our culture today. The problem I see with this relation, is that Israel were not to witness to the Caananites, they were to absolutely eradicate them from the land, as the judgment of God upon them. I would suggest that typologically, Israel entering the promised land is closer to the book of Revelation than the book of Acts. Joshua the military commander is a type of Jesus, the rider on the white horse.

Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords. Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and with a loud voice he called to all the birds that fly directly overhead, “Come, gather for the great supper of God, to eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all men, both free and slave, both small and great.” And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies gathered to make war against him who was sitting on the horse and against his army.

Activating mailto links in Firefox

August 11, 2007

A technique snaffled from the internet:

  1. Launch Firefox and view the configuration strings using the URL about:config
  2. using the field at the top, search for mailto
  3. If you do NOT have network.protocol-handler.app.mailto, create it using these steps:
    1. right-click
    2. choose New –> String
    3. new string: network.protocol-handler.app.mailto
    4. new value: /opt/kde/bin/kmail (or whatever other mail program takes your fancy)
  4. If you already see an entry for network.protocol-handler.app.mailto, verify the path to the mail client. Double click the string to set it if necessary. Also be sure network.protocol-handler.external.mailto is set to true.
